Those PCBs are done that way for two reasons... one, strength. It's not heavy, but you'd be hard pressed to kick anything out of position. Two... now signals can be routed in three dimensions so that all circuits cross at 90-degrees for a minimum of crosstalk. Sorry for the blurry photo.
